Lunch with friends and a little more summer on the terrace.
I love going into Luxembourg City. It’s a short bus ride from where I live, and the center always feels lively, with its shops, cafés, and people out enjoying the day.
This time, I met friends for lunch at L’Hêtre Beim Musée, the restaurant at the Lëtzebuerg City Museum. It was sunny and mild, so we took a table on the terrace overlooking the Grund. Fall is on its way, and we knew there might not be many more afternoons like this before the rain arrives.
L’Hêtre takes its name from the old beech tree that once stood in the museum courtyard. The tree had to be removed in 2022, but I like that it remains part of the place.
We started with a Hugo and an Aperol Spritz—a little toast to the last of summer. Then we settled in for the plat du jour.
For starters, we ate salmon rillettes with toast and ravioli with wild mushrooms. The main courses were swordfish with crispy potatoes and tomato sauce, and Parmentier with braised beef, caramelized red onion, creamy mashed potatoes, and aged Comté. I loved cutting into the Parmentier and finding the beef beneath that golden top.
We finished with apple tart, then coffee served with little madeleines and meringues. By then, we were in no hurry to leave.
It was a lovely, leisurely lunch with friends, good food, and a view I could have enjoyed all afternoon. I wish I could have made it last just a little longer.

The Plat du Jour
