Returning to a Place That Still Feels Like Home
There are some places that stay with you long after you’ve moved away.
While we were visiting the Pacific Northwest, we took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island, where we used to live. We weren’t there to sightsee. We just wanted to spend one more day visiting some of our favorite places, sharing lunch with a friend, and enjoying the island before heading back to Luxembourg.
One of my favorite parts of the day wasn’t something we planned. As we wandered around town, we kept running into people we knew. We’d stop to say hello, catch up for a few minutes, share a hug, and then continue on until it happened again.
That’s what I love about Bainbridge. Even after all these years, it still feels familiar.
Some places stay with you because they’re beautiful. Others stay with you because of the people. Bainbridge has always been a little bit of both.
Morning at Blackbird Bakery
When I’m on Bainbridge Island it’s a must to stop by Blackbird Bakery. The Downtowner and a latte have become something of a tradition, and after all these years, it still feels like one of the best ways to start the morning. It was the perfect way to ease into the day before wandering through one of our favorite places.
Lunch at Doc’s Marina Grill
Lunch was at Doc’s Marina Grill with a longtime friend. We ordered ahi tuna tacos, Dungeness crab cakes, fried oysters, Camembert baguette and plenty of conversation.
The food was wonderful, but what I enjoyed most was simply sitting there overlooking the marina, talking about life and catching up while boats drifted in and out of the harbor. It was a lovely day on Bainbridge.
What I Learned
- Returning to a place you’ve loved can feel less like traveling and more like picking up where you left off.
- Familiar places have a way of bringing old memories back to the surface.
- The best days don’t always need an itinerary. Sometimes good food, good company, and time to wander are enough.
- Home can exist in more than one place.
